Grants
Beyond Grant Writing

We have raised tens of millions of dollars in foundation and government (municipal, state, and federal) grants over 17 years in the following non-profit subsectors:
  • Art & Culture
  • Addiction
  • Mental Health
  • Historic Preservation & Restoration
  • Environmental Conservation & Restoration
  • Energy Efficiency - Solar
  • Human Services - Food, Transition & Affordable Housing, Childcare
  • Agriculture - Buy Local, Grow-to-Donate Farms, Gleaning
  • Veterans
  • Tribal
  • Recreation - Sport, Camps
  • Trade Associations
  • Legislative Advocacy
  • Libraries
  • Museums
  • Education
  • Digital Equity
  • Workforce Development - Workforce Investment Boards

We start with interviewing key staff and/or Board members to identify what you want and/or should be going after grants for.  From there, we conduct research and create a 1-Year Grants Calendar, which is in an Excel chart form and includes funder information, deadlines, grant amount to request, how the grant proposal must be submitted, likelihood of funding, and difficulty of the grant application process, proposal status (to-do, pending, funded, denied), and report due dates for funded grants. We typically identify 24 grants to apply to per year, with the pace of 2 per month. We utilize Foundation Directory Online (FDO) and our extensive knowledge of New England funders. We provide FDO summaries for each identified funder.

The next step is creating Base Proposals for each identified program/project, as well as General Operating and proposal budgets. Often, this step includes additional program development and data/measurable outcomes that must be tracked. We establish your baseline datapoints and whether the goal is to maintain the program as it is currently being delivered or grow the program. Typically, both the organization and the potential funder are aiming for a level of annual expansion and growth. Through the development of Base Proposals, we also review and often revise how the organization generally describes itself, including Mission, History, Program Overview, Populations/Demographics Served, Staff/Board/Volunteers/Organizational Structure, and Geography for Program Delivery.

From here, we move into Submissions - following the Grants Calendar to submit approximately 2 proposals per month for a total of 24 for the year. Some organizations are large enough, with wider ranging programs, that enable them to submit 48+ grants per year.

Our overall Funding Rate - the percentage of proposals funded out of the total number of proposals submitted - is 75%. Depending on many factors, such as the age/track record of the organization/program or current funding trends, our funding rates range between 55% and 96%.
